Phoenix announces 2012 season

Phoenix Ensemble's 2012 season features a classic David Williamson play and a politically incorrect (and adults-only) puppet musical, as well two high-energy musicals.

There's something for everyone: I'm too sexy for the 90s (an original musical), After The Ball (a poignant drama by David Williamson), Buddy: The Musical (the story of Buddy Holly) and Avenue Q (an outrageous musical comedy featuring actors and puppets).

Full details here.

The hills are alive...

Seriously...

Our friends at Phoenix Ensemble are staging the classic musical The Sound of Music for five weekends from October 14. It's directed by Tracey Hutley, who's given us fantastic productions including Cats, Spamalot, Sweet Charity and Chess, and features a fantastic vocal cast.

Redlands Kayak Tours rescues adventurous dog at Thorneside

After returning from a three-hour kayaking tour on Saturday, Redlands Kayak Tours co-owner Tony Beutel had to paddle into the bay once more to rescue an adventurous Golden Retriever called Lucy.

Apparently, Lucy regularly swims along the Thorneside Beach foreshore, but on Saturday swam further away than usual and wouldn't come back when called. Her frantic minder spotted Tony and wife Katrina returning from a tour and asked for help. By this time, Lucy had made it past the Aquatic Paradise canal inlet and was on her way to Wellington Point. So, Tony paddled after her, joined her in the water and then lifted her onto the kayak.

Lucy enjoyed the ride back – thinking the paddles were part of some sort of game – and was keen to stay on even when they reached the shore!

Phoenix Ensemble tackles the Bard

Our friends at Phoenix Ensemble are presenting Shakespeare's romantic comedy Much Ado About Nothing at Beenleigh's Pavilion Theatre from 22 July.

Direct David Keirnan is pleased with the way the production is coming together, with the rehearsal period including a workshop with Jennifer Flowers, one of Australia's most acclaimed professional stage actors.

It will be something a little different for Phoenix, and promises to be an rare opportunity to see a production that does the text justice, up close and personal, in the boutique Pavilion Theatre.
